My name is Ashley Guthrie. I am from a small town, known as Huron. I have a little brother, who just happens to be my best friend. My grandparents were religious, so I grew up with a lot of church and religious music. My mom and dad were seperated when I was younger, so I listened to different music depending on who I was living with at the time. I worked at McDonald's for the duration of my senior year and the people there are now my second family. I spend a lot of my free time listening to music and reading. These are things I have gotten from my mom, because we spent more time together. However, I get along better with my dad now, than my mom.
There are about three hundred people in my hometown, which is actually smaller than my high school. Living in such a rural area means that there isn't a lot to do, but plenty of space to find something. Running through my town is a small creek that is great for fishing. That is what most weekends consisted of for me. Going out late in the afternoon and staying well into the night to fish has always been a hobby of mine since I moved there. This is one of my favorite songs that I love to hear coming out of my truck when I'm headed down to the creek for some fun that night.
During my senior year of high school, I got my first job at McDonald's. I worked five days a week, 35 hours a week while going to school. It was hard, but a lot of things are. I spent most of my time there on the weekends and after school. It became my second home and the people that I met there and worked with so frequently became my second family. When I got off work, I would stay and wait for other people to get off and we would just sit and watch televsion together and wind down from the day. I worked this past summer as well. If I did happen to have the day off, I would usually go to McDonald's and hang out. Why not? Most of my friends were there or would be coming by to see who else was off and hanging out. It was basically the unofficial meeting place for off work workers to meet up. I was a drive-thru professional, all I did every night was take orders and money for drive-thru every night I was there after four o'clock. I had almost thirty people rap this song in drive while I was taking orders. I remember the number because we had a tally going between a few of us and mine was always the highest because I was in the back so frequently.
I love to listen to music. Its one of the things I like to do best besides read. I keep my truck full of CDs so that I always have something to listen to. It is something that my little brother Tyler and I have in common. We like a lot of the same music and it is one of the things that we agree upon with each other most of the time. We grew up listening to a lot of different varieties of music from our parents and grandparents and older cousins. We don't always like the same, some I prefer more than him and visa versa. But the thing I love most is when I introduce something new to him. I love to find amazing songs and bands from different places and have him listen to them. It makes me feel accomplished, like I have done something to change his life when I find something that is wonderful and he enjoys just as uch as me. The best part is always when he jumps in the car with me, plugs his phone into the radio and starts the song that I just had him listen to a few hours ago.
I try to be an optimistic person. If something happens that I do not really like then I will usually just shrug it off. I find no reason in dwelling on what has happened and try to focus on what will happen. I don't let what other people think bother me either. Sometimes things are hard, but its part of life. I stay positive about the future and let go of what has happened.
This is the song that I remember most from my childhood when I was with my mom. My mom is a big fan of Kid Rock and has gone to see him in concert many times. We would climb into our old pickup truck and this album was always in the tape player. My brother and I could both sing the entire song; it was something we were both proud of ourselves for. My mom let us listen to the tape when we were younger, until I was about 13. When I got old enough to actually understand the lyrics, I was no longer allowed to listen until I was old enough, so she said.
Ashley! I love the first blog. It was interesting, as I was reading the intro paragraph I was surprised because it sounded alot like my life. Especially the part about being real close with your brother I think that's awesome. But enough of that, I loved your song choices and after listening to them I am starting to get to understand you more. I love the fishing in the dark and McDonalds rap, there both classics and I can totally relate to both. I was in alot of sports in school and I understand what you mean by your second family. Great job on the blog and I look forward to getting to know you more throughout these two weeks
ReplyDeleteHey Ashley -
ReplyDeleteI can definitely identify with working crazy hours and going to school! That's tough, but you're coming from that situation into college, and I think that'll really help you out once the school year starts. Whether you'll be working and taking classes or not, you'll definitely be coming from a situation where you've had to delegate time previously between work and school work; this is something many people come into college not knowing how to do, and that you have a leg up on that already is just kudos to you.
Great job with the blog entry and really getting to the heart of the assignment!

I liked your McDonalds post a lot also! I've always wondered if people would try to recreate that video at drive-thru windows elsewhere. I remember a talent show my school put on in middle school in which a group of friends of mine performed this rap. Everyone loved it and thought it was hilarious. I also relate to your post in the I had a couple of jobs in high school too which had some long tedious hours. Still it was a lot of fun talking to and getting to know my coworkers. First jobs are quite the experience, and I am glad to hear yours was so memorable!
ReplyDeleteAshley,
ReplyDeleteFirst off I have a little brother who is 6 and he is my best friend no doubt about that! Working is a huge part of my life along with sports and school, so I know how it feels to be always doing something I love the rap though. I always try to actually see if I can rap along but it fails. Fishin' in the Dark one of my favorite fishing songs. When I'm with friends fishing that is normally our song! I enjoyed the song Feel good, I can relate so much. Music always helps me get in a better mode and me and my family are really close in music too. So I love that we can relate in that way. You had great song choices, and great story!
