Music Making.

Studio-Audio Art
Studio-Audio Art is the way of making music with a computer.  The sounds are all computer generated and cannot be recreated in the natural world.  The composer does not need to have any other human contact in order to create his music.  Infected Mushroom uses his computer to put toether his song "Psycho".  He creates sounds that in turn create iconic relationships with things that have been heard by the listener before, but they are not quite the same.

This type of music making can have drawbacks.  Very little human interaction is needed to create this type of music.  Only the composer has any say over how the music is created and what he wants it to sound like.  However, this music has a lot of potential.  With the aid of computers, sounds that had never been heard before can now be created.  Without the computer, people could only hear natural sounds that occured.  This type of music opens the spectrum for musical possiblities and combinations.

High Fidelity
High fidelity music making is musical sounds heard on recordings that index live performances.  This is the kind of music that most people are used to listening to.  This is only listening to the music, with no visuals.  For that reason, songs need variation to help keep the listener's attention.  In their song "Hit and Run", Breathe Carolina has two vocalists.  This adds a change in who you are listening to throughout the song, whether it be the two singing seperately or together.  There are three possible combinations for them vocals.  The band also uses computer-generated sounds to emphasize certain parts of the song.  Breathe Carolina uses variation to their advantage in this song.

High fidelity music is made in a studio and is to perserve the feeling of the song performance being live.  However, when recording in a studio, the people are alone in the room making their music.  They do not have to come in contact with the other members of the group while doing their part of the song.  Many different people who have never known each other can make music together if they are recorded.  An engineer has most of the control when mixing together the member's sounds.  This can be a good thing and a bad thing.  The members do not have to know each other, but with their recordings an engineer can do what he wants to make the instuments blend and mix together in ways that might be different than the way the people thought could be done.  On the bad side, however, the social interaction of the recording members is lost because of the isolation during their music making time.

Presentational
Presentational does just as the name implies.  A specific group provides, or presents, music to another group of people.  This is live music for people to go see and enjoy.  It is the music for listening and enjoying.  Along with the music is the visual effects that help keep the attention of the audience.  Motley Crue has no trouble doing this.  With classic and new songs, the band can keep the audience entertained very well.  But, one of the most notable things about a Motley Crue concert is Tommy Lee's spinning drum solo.  He has been doing it since the '80s and his performances are just getting better.  With the graphics of the screen behind him and light show, this clip shows just what he is capable of when he is on his spinning drum set.

Presentational music making must keep the attention of the audience.  This can be a difficult thing, trying to come up with new things when performers have been around for years.  But this can be an amzing experience for the viewer; being able to see the amazing shows that performers put on just to impress the crowd.  The bands or artists get much time to rehearse and be prepared for the show.  During the music, a listener can hear and distinguish the different instruments that are playing.  The downside to this performance, however, is that there is not always a lot of audience involvememnt.  There is a distinct line between the performer and listener.

Participatery
Participatery music making is acheived when everyone around is helping make the sound come together and connect with each other.  There is no distinction between the artist and audience.  Everyone is included in the performance.  The importance is not in the music itself, but in the connection that comes from creating the music.  This is true in church situations.  When praising at church on a Sunday morning, everyone is expected to help.  Even if the only thing a person can do is sway in their seat and clap their hands along, it is appreciated by all the other members of the congregation.

The emphasis of the participatory music making style is on the collective feeling of oneness that the people who have joined in experience.  This could cause the music to suffer, which is not the main goal of this style but important none the less.  A downside to this stle is that people are expected to join in and will makes others offended if they do not.  This could be a challenge for someone who is extrememly shy and not comfortable around other people, even if joining in may help with the shyness.  This is also a potential, however, because it can help someone come out of their shell and interact with the others around him.
